The official start of the Oktoberfest is the procession of the Wiesn hosts. Led by the Münchner Kindl and the reigning Lord Mayor of Munich, the festive and magnificently decorated horse-drawn carriages of the breweries and the floats of the showmen and Oktoberfest innkeepers arrive together on the Wiesn. They are accompanied by the many music bands from the festival tents. At 12.00 noon sharp on the first day, the Lord Mayor personally taps the first beer barrel in the Schottenhamel tent. This officially opens the Oktoberfest Munich.

Another highlight of the Oktoberfest every year is the traditional costume parade. It is considered one of the world’s largest parades of its kind and is also led by the Münchner Kindl. This parade stretches over 7 km from the Maximilianeum to the festival meadows and is performed on the first Sunday of the Oktoberfest.

There is usually no movement in the Schützenzelt by midday. So if you want to get a seat here, you should do so quite early in the morning. At lunchtime, the cozy Mittagswiesn begins and then there is a crispy suckling pig, real Bavarian in malt beer sauce and a crunchy coleslaw.
